Are you a passionate Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) looking to make a meaningful impact on healthcare? Drake Medox Health Services actively recruits skilled and compassionate nurses in all areas of practice across Canada from acute care and long-term care to community health and specialized clinical settings.

Key Responsibilities:
An LPN/RPN’s specific duties will vary depending on their work environment and provincial regulations. General responsibilities include:
Patient care: Assisting patients with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, and eating.
  • Monitoring and assessment: Taking and recording vital signs, observing patients, and reporting any changes in their condition to an RN or doctor. 
  • Medication administration: Administering prescribed oral, topical, and injectable medications. Some provinces may require additional training for more advanced procedures, such as IV therapy.
  • Wound care: Cleaning and dressing wounds and assisting with other basic medical procedures.
    Record keeping: Maintaining accurate and timely patient charts and health records, often using electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Patient and family education: Providing emotional and psychological support and educating patients and their families on health management and care instructions.
  • Assisting with procedures: Helping physicians and RNs with medical procedures and collecting samples for lab testing.
    Supervision: Depending on experience and provincial rules, some LPNs may supervise health care aids, or other unlicensed personnel.
  • Collaboration:
          Working collaboratively with RNs, physicians, and allied health professionals
          Respecting scopes of practice and consulting when care exceeds individual competencies
          Supporting a positive team culture through respectful communication and shared decision-making
Qualifications:
  • Education: Complete an accredited practical nursing diploma program in Canada.
  • Licensing exam: After graduating, candidates must pass the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE). In the U.S., the equivalent exam is the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).
  • Registration: LPN/RPNs must register with their provincial or territorial regulatory body, such as the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA), to receive a practice permit and must be in good standing.
  • Clinical skills: LPNs/RPNs must have strong technical nursing abilities, such as administering medications and performing wound care.
  • Communication skills: Excellent verbal and written communication is essential for interacting with patients, families, and other healthcare team members.
  • Soft skills: Other important qualities include compassion, empathy, patience, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Specialization (optional): Additional academic training or specialization for advanced roles or jurisdiction specific course
